SUMMARY:Refraction
DESCRIPTION:Refraction is a vibrant evening of contemporary dance that invites families to see movement—and each other—in a whole new way. This performance will be Conflux Dance Theater’s fifth headlining production at VCU’s Grace Street Theater, bringing together a dynamic lineup of nationally recognized choreographers and Richmond-based artists in an engaging evening of contemporary dance. Inspired by the way light reveals hidden colors when refracted, Refraction explores how shifting perspective can transform the way we experience movement. The program features new works by Artistic Director Miguel Perez alongside acclaimed choreographers Penny Saunders, James Gregg, and JA Collective—each offering a distinct artistic voice that pushes the boundaries of contemporary dance. Known for its commitment to representation and accessibility, Conflux showcases a diverse company of dancers across race, body type, and life experience, creating work that reflects the richness of the Richmond community. Through collaboration among choreographers, dancers, and production artists, Refraction highlights the power of different perspectives coming together. Designed to be welcoming to a wide range of audiences, the performance is appropriate for older children and teens, offering an engaging introduction to contemporary dance through dynamic movement, music, and storytelling. Families can expect a visually striking and thought-provoking experience that sparks curiosity and conversation.
