Born in Richmond, Virginia, Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. became the U. S. Navy’s first Black Admiral and Commander of a warship and a fleet. In 2004, Vice Admiral Gravely, Jr., gave an interview to the Virginia War Memorial, just six months before his death at the age of 82. Join VWM Education Director Jim Triesler as he explores the life of Vice Admiral Gravely, the influence of his family, and the inspiring legacy that he left for us all.
