FreeBorn in Richmond, Virginia, Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. became the U. S. Navy’s first Black Admiral and Commander of a warship and a fleet. In 2004, Vice Admiral Gravely, Jr., gave an interview to the Virginia War Memorial, just six months before his death at the age of 82.
