Songs of Freedom

The 1960s are explored through the work of three prolific artists: Joni Mitchell, Abbey Lincoln, and Nina Simone — all of whom have made an indelible mark in American music. Each artist expressed freedom in different ways. To effectively deliver this vast repertoire, the program features vocalists René Marie, Alicia Olatuja, and Theo Bleckmann. Arrive early for a pre-performance discussion with the performers, led by WCVE Music Jazz host Peter Solomon at 6:30 p.m.

The Charenée Wade Quartet

Known for her expert vocal improvisational ability and her seriously swinging groove, Wade evokes a classic jazz sound akin to Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, two of her musical touchstones. Her most recent album, Offering, is the first tribute album by a woman artist to the socially conscious poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron. A 1-hour drop-off cartwheel clinic for ages 4 and older. This clinic is designed to help introduce and improve the cartwheel and round-off, and is suitable for beginner, experienced beginner, and intermediate levels. Drills will focus on breaking down the cartwheel to teach proper form and technique.

Daniil Trifonov, Piano

Russian pianist Trifonov with an incredibly rare U.S. performance. The evening’s program will include Beethoven’s Andante Favori, and Sonata No. 18, Op. 31, No. 3 (“The Hunt”); selections from Schumann’s Bunte Blätter, as well as his Presto passionato, Op. 22; and Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 8.
