The Greater Richmond Sailing Association holds week-long sail camps from June through August for beginner and intermediate/advanced students. All sessions are taught by U.S. Sailing certified instructors, and will be held at the club facilities at 4301 Wooldridge Road on Swift Creek Reservoir in Midlothian. Level I Sail Camp – No experience required! Make new friends, spend the week on the lake, and learn how to sail. Sailors will learn how to rig sailboats, parts of a sailboat, sail trim, safety, how to read the wind, and steering. 8-12 year olds will have the opportunity to be the captain of their own boat while sailing Optimist dinghies, while 13-17 year old will be paired up to jointly operate our Collegiate 420 sailboats. You can earn high school PE credits in Chesterfield County for this course (please see your school’s guidance counselor for more information).
Level II Sail Camp – Build on your experiences from Level I Camp! Learn intermediate/advanced sailing techniques, and experiment with the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math components of sailing. In the 8-12 year old class, students will continue to expand their knowledge on sailing Opti’s and learn more advanced sailing techniques. They will also experience a long distance sail across Swift Creek Reservoir. In the 13-17 year old class students will be introduced to flying a spinnakers and the basic of racing. This class will still utilize our Collegiate 420’s.
Mid-Teen Week-GRSA has made some adjustments in our ages for our classes to better accommodate our student’s needs. Do to this change we have added a special week specifically catered to our oldest group of students, ages 15-17 years old. This class will be taught in our 19’ Flying Scots and be geared toward teaching higher level sailing concepts and interests of an older group. This would be the ideal class to take to earn high school PE credits in Chesterfield County. (please see your school’s guidance counselor for more information).
