Learn about the impact of the Bermuda Hundred Campaign in 1864 by visiting some of the county’s Civil War sites. Discover why this campaign was overshadowed by military engagements elsewhere. Tour includes stops at Dutch Gap, Battery Dantzler, Point of Rocks and Drewry’s Bluff. Transportation provided from Henricus. Space is limited. Bring snacks and drinks. Wear comfortable shoes. Pre registration is required.

A Roof Above My Head – Construction of an Early Soldier’s House

Learn about the tools and strategies used to help locate and excavate sites and the archaeological methods used to create a living history museum. Join in “practice” excavation techniques, help sort and clean artifacts found in the area, and see what you can say about history through artifacts. Battle at Osborne’s Landing – Revolutionary War Re-enactment

Visit Revolutionary War re-enactors in their American and British encampments as they re-create the 1781 Battle at Osborne’s Landing where Major General William Phillips ordered British forces, including Benedict Arnold, to attack the supplies of the Virginia State Navy and Virginia Militia. During this attack, most of the Virginia State Navy fleet was destroyed. Visitors will experience militia drills and artillery demos.

Home School Day – 17th Century Sciences and Technology

Students will learn how changes in religion, economics, government, education and the sciences in 17th century Europe helped to fuel the Age of Exploration and Colonization of America. Work on site with 17th century technology and simple machines. Students will be divided by age level to work on age-appropriate activities and curriculum. Musket, Sword, and Pike

Experience a day in the life of the soldiers of Sir Thomas Dale’s militia. Visit with the soldiers in the 1611 Citie of Henricus, participate in drills with the Henricus Militia and see demonstrations of tactics, armor and weaponry used by the 17th century soldiers who built and protected Henricus. In addition, there will also be interpreters demonstrating 18th and 19th century Virginia militia. Free admission will be offered to active and retired military members and their immediate families.

Trades of Antiquity
