Home School Day – 17th Century Sciences and Technology

Students will learn how changes in religion, economics, government, education and the sciences in 17th century Europe helped to fuel the Age of Exploration and Colonization of America. Work on site with 17th century technology and simple machines. Students will be divided by age level to work on age-appropriate activities and curriculum. Musket, Sword, and Pike

Experience a day in the life of the soldiers of Sir Thomas Dale’s militia. Visit with the soldiers in the 1611 Citie of Henricus, participate in drills with the Henricus Militia and see demonstrations of tactics, armor and weaponry used by the 17th century soldiers who built and protected Henricus. In addition, there will also be interpreters demonstrating 18th and 19th century Virginia militia. Free admission will be offered to active and retired military members and their immediate families.

Trades of Antiquity

See demonstrations of life skills and trades from the pre-contact and Colonial eras in Virginia such as flint knapping, fire starting, wood turning, broom weaving, soap making, trapping, hide prep, and blacksmithing. Discovery Day: Two Lives of Pocahontas

Learn how the child Pocahontas would have lived, worked and been educated in the Powhatan Indian world 400 years ago. Hands-on activities and demonstrations, make-and-take projects, and site tours of the re-created village of Arrohateck. For children 3 to 12, they must be accompanied by an adult. Come and learn what an Indian or English Colonial child’s day would have included after chores and lessons were done: fun and games. Learn what activities would have been done and what each would have taught the children – coordination, hunting skills, and aspects of their cultures.  For children age 3 to 10, all children must be accompanied by an adult. Listen to European stories early Colonists told as they recounted tales from their homeland. Affairs of the Hearth

Explore 17th-century cooking in the daily life of English soldiers, middle-class colonists, and Virginia Indians. Demonstrations at the Virginia Indian site will feature the smoking of meat and making of harvest stew and corn cakes. Historical interpreters will demonstrate how soldiers made small rations of salted bacon, peas and oatmeal appealing through additives of bread, cheese and yard vegetables. Middle-class cooking will be featured at the re-created plantation of John and Alice Proctor to highlight a typical English autumn meal.…

Begin in 1611 at Henricus Fort and see how Dutch ideas influenced English holiday traditions. Move on to 1778, when the Revolution called for simpler ways to mark the season. Next, it’s 1860: celebrate with carols and hot cider while decorating a Victorian Christmas tree by the fireside. Your festive journey through time will end with a visit from Father Christmas.
