Charmaine Crowell-White will provide a first-person portrayal of famed abolitionist and women’s rights activist Sojourner Truth. Born Isabella in the late 1790s, in New York State, Truth escaped to freedom and became a noted champion of human rights. Black History Month events are included with regular paid Park admission or active Park memberships.

Dr. Kelley Deetz will speak on her recently published book, Bound to the Fire: How Virginia’s Enslaved Cooks Helped Invent American Cuisine. A limited number of books will be available for purchase and signing. Following Dr. Deetz’s talk, Wisteria Perry will provide a tour of the recreated Tudor Hall kitchen quarter and explain how plantation kitchens functioned.

Each Home School Tour includes a visit to the award-winning exhibit Duty Called Me Here and two hands-on programs, Plantation Life, and A Civil War Soldier’s Life, led by Pamplin Historical Park Educators. These programs are individually designed for children from third to twelfth grade. Reservations and a non-refundable prepayment by credit card or check are required. 5K Breakthrough Trail Run/Walk

Breakthrough Anniversary Walking Tour

Tour the Breakthrough Battle of April 2nd, 1865 while bringing the conflict and personalities alive for this special experience on the actual battlefield.  After a brief overview of the Overland and Petersburg Campaigns, guests will then embark on a tour of the battlefield to explore the original terrain features while incorporating the history that unfolded on this National Landmark site resulting in the collapse of Petersburg defenses and the withdrawal of Confederate forces from Richmond. Breakthrough Battle Anniversary

Remember the 153rd Anniversary of the Breakthrough Battle which ended the Petersburg Campaign and forced the Confederate withdrawal from Richmond. Visitors will have the opportunity to drill with the troops, cook soldier’s food, watch battle demonstrations, learn about etiquette and period clothing and listen to period music and more.

Memorial Day Commemoration

A special Memorial Day program will begin at 12:30 p.m. Visitors will learn about a number of specific soldiers and their personal experiences during the Civil War.  Their stories illustrate the causes and consequences of the Civil War. The program will include an artillery firing followed by the presentation of the colors and a playing of Taps. Programming will conclude with Civil War musical selections performed by the Haversacks & Hardtack String Band in the Education Center.

Breakthrough Beer and Wine Fest
