First Friday Art Samplers

First-come, first-served art classes in two seatings. Bring a group of friends or your entire family for this special night out. The first session runs from 6:00 p.m. - 7:15 p.m. and the second runs from 7:30 p.m. - 8:45 p.m. There’s no online or advanced registration for these one-off classes. Choose from at least five rotating sampler topics each month.

“Of secrecy, the violet” Exhibition

An exhibition of work by New York City-based artist Elissa Levy, and it showcases Levy's experimentation with a variety of materials and techniques that blur mediums and genres. The artist will present prints, collages and sculpture using materials ranging from fabric and leather to aluminum.

First-come, first-serve sign-ups for these one-night art classes start at 5:00 p.m. in VisArts’ lobby. There will be cash bar with local brews and artist demonstrations so you can grab a drink and watch an artist demonstration between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. From there, you can head to your 6:00 p.m. class or come back for the second session, which starts at 7:30 p.m.

Art Junction Chili Throwdown

Over 20 restaurants contribute their best chili, which is taste-tested by both a blind jury and the event’s attendees. After guests have voted, they’re welcome to go back for a full bowl of their favorite chili.

48-to-Create

A weekend-long make-a-thon. A 48-hour dash to create your own new work. Visual artists and writers welcome. On Sunday, there is a reception for all participants. All participants will have the opportunity to enter the work they created over the weekend into a competition, which will be judged by a guest panel of jurors. Three participants will win a year of free studio access. Advance registration is required.

“I><WE" Exhibition

An exhibition of work by Emmy Bright, Jessica Heikes, and Leigh Suggs that, is a collective project that softens the boundaries between separate artists. While these three artists live in different cities (Detroit, Kansas City, and Richmond), they have remained in close dialogue since first meeting at a residency in 2009. Each artists’ style is unique, ranging from abstraction to notation, hard-edged, to organic forms. They also differ in preferred media: printmaking, sculpture, and drawing.
