Powhatan County Fair Opens May 17

The 2013 Powhatan County Fair will launch the spring carnival season for Virginia’s county fairs. It is the 94th annual fair produced by the Powhatan County Fair Association and will be open daily from May 17-19, 2013 at the Powhatan County Fairgrounds located at 4042 Anderson Highway (Route 60). Fair hours are 5 p.m. to 12 midnight on Friday; Saturday 12 p.m. to 12 midnight, and 1:00 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. General gate admission is $6.

“This year’s main attraction will be the popular Stellar Circus & Thrills Show,” says LaTika Lee, Powhatan County Fair Marketing Coordinator, “It’s a dazzling, family-friendly show packed with the excitement that only the circus can bring to town! Fairgoers will be captivated by their nimble ropewalking, aerial acrobatics, and death-defying juggling acts. And the rescue dogs’ performances are amazing, too!”

The three-day fair will feature the Miss Powhatan County Fair Queen pageant; dirt-track action excitement with a truck and tractor pull, as well as the thrilling mud-filled pit “Mudd Bogg” competition. Truck and tractor “pulling” is a form of motorsports enjoyed by many people all over the United States. It was first started by local farmers in the early 1900’s to see whose tractor had the most pulling power. Over the decades, it has turned into the modern pulling events seen today.

“We pull what is called a weight transfer sled that as your vehicle advances, a box moves forward putting weight on a pan that transfers it to the pulling vehicle. The object is to see who can pull the sled the farthest distance,” says J.R. Rolfe, promoter of Wanta Pull Productions.

A new attraction at the 2013 fair will be an educational, agricultural magic show called “Agricadabra”. The agricultural show promises to entertain and educate fairgoers about farm life, healthy eating and “Going Green”. The Powhatan Cooperative Extension office will present a host of activities on Saturday, May 18th including the 5th Annual Dog Show contest. Contest details maybe found online.

The fair will also host nightly live entertainment showcasing local artists, bands and regional talent under the big tent. A showcase of Gospel choirs will take place on Sunday afternoon. A full schedule is available at http://www.powhatanfair.org/. America’s #1 carnival, Deggeller Attractions, Inc., will be providing the midway rides and games.

Admission is $6 for adults (ages 13 and up), $3 for seniors (ages 55 and up) and $3 for children (ages 4-12). Children age 3 and under will be admitted free. Active military and reserve will also be admitted free with military ID or in uniform. Discounted unlimited ride “wristband” tickets are available in advance. Sponsorship is provided by Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, Byerly’s Auto Mart, Central Virginia Bank, Chesterfield Auto Parts, and Weigh Pack.

For more information, please visit www.powhatanfair.org or contact Randa Jackson at 804-240-0390. The Powhatan County Fair Association is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and a member of the Virginia Association of Fairs and the International Association of Fairs and Expositions.
