River City Rollergirls Host 2013 WFTDA Division 1 Playoffs
The top 40 women’s flat track roller derby leagues in the world will compete for the sport’s top honor in the 2013 Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) Division 1 Playoffs and Championships this fall. Representing the best of the best in women’s roller derby, ten Playoffs qualifiers will compete in Richmond, Virginia, Sept. 13 to 15 in one of four playoff tournaments. The River City Rollergirls were selected to host one of four WFTDA D1 Playoffs tournaments this year.
The WFTDA Playoffs and Championships bring together the most talented, highly trained and committed skaters and officials from WFTDA member leagues to display the “Real, Strong, Athletic and Revolutionary” game play that pushes the limits of the sport worldwide. Whether participating on the track, cheering in the stands or watching online, the WFTDA tournaments provide everyone who loves roller derby an opportunity to witness the most anticipated match-ups of the year.
Today the WFTDA announced the competitors for this year’s Playoffs in Richmond. The top 40 teams that have met minimum game play requirements were split among the four Playoffs brackets using “S-curve” seeding, similar to what is used for the NCAA basketball tournaments. These teams will compete Sept. 13 to 15 in hopes of finishing in the top three and advancing to the WFTDA Championships in November.
