Marland Buckner has been named interim executive director of the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. The decision is part of a plan by the center’s board of directors to find a permanent successor after the tragic death of Adele Johnson, the center’s long-time executive director.

Buckner, co-founder and principal of MB2 Solutions LLC, a Washington D.C.-based public policy strategy and impact development firm with offices in Richmond, brings a unique combination of academic and professional experiences to the role.

“Marland’s academic, public policy, and business background are ideal given the center’s needs at this critical juncture,” said Dr. Monroe E. Harris Jr., board chair of Black History Museum. “His doctoral work in African American history, service on Capitol Hill and in the corporate and private sector, position him to help the center navigate the host of challenges we face in these turbulent times. The board is grateful that Marland has agreed to serve in this capacity and looks forward to working in close collaboration within him to position the center for long term success,” said Harris.

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to support the center during this transition, and to build on Adele’s transformative leadership to ensure the Board is well positioned to secure her permanent successor and to work with all stakeholders to maintain the culture of excellence she established,” said Buckner.

The search for the next executive director will be undertaken by a select committee of the board.
