This post includes information about early voting for the presidential primary in Henrico County and Chesterfield County. To learn about voting in the City of Richmond, Hanover County, or other areas in the region, visit individual websites.

Voting in Henrico County

Absentee in-person voting for the March 5 presidential primary election has begun at Henrico’s Voter Registration and Elections offices.

County voters can cast their early ballots at the offices’ Henrico Government Center and Eastern Government Center locations from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, through March 1. The offices will be open for in-person voting on the two Saturdays prior to the election, February 24 and March 2. An additional voting location will open at Varina Area Library from February 20 to March 2.

Voters also can return completed absentee ballots to five drop boxes throughout the county.

To participate in the primary, voters must register or update an existing registration by Monday, February 12.

Visit the Henrico County website for More information about voting in Henrico County.

Voting in Chesterfield County

In Chesterfield County, early voting for the presidential primaries began at the Registrar’s Office only, located at 9848 Lori Road on Friday, Jan. 19.

Registrar’s Office Voting Hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, March 2: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Starting Saturday, Feb. 24, satellite locations will open at:

North Courthouse Road Library325 Courthouse Road, North Chesterfield
LaPrade Library9000 Hull Street Road, North Chesterfield
Meadowdale Library4301 Meadowdale Blvd, North Chesterfield
Ettrick-Matoaca Library4501 River Road, South Chesterfield
Clover Hill Library6701 Deer Run Drive, Midlothian

Satellite Locations Voting Hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, March 2: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

As in primaries past, the original list of state-approved candidates may change during the primary season. Notices will be posted if a candidate files a formal notice of withdrawal with the State Board of Elections.

Voters who receive a by-mail ballot are encouraged to use the postage paid return envelope or return their marked ballot in the secure dropbox at the Registrar’s Office, any of the five satellite locations during early voting or any polling precinct on election day, during voting hours.

If a voter changes their mind, does not wish to vote by-mail and wants to vote in person, they must bring the ballot with them to the voting location and relinquish it upon check-in. They will be issued a separate ballot that will be marked and fed into the scanner/tabulator.

Curbside voting for those with a disability or ages sixty-five and older is available during early voting.

Voters must provide their name and address and show an acceptable form of ID.  To view a complete list of acceptable IDs, visit the state Department of Election’s Voting In-Person page.

To find more information about the 2024 March Primary Election in Chesterfield, including sample ballots and candidate information, visit promotethevotecfield.org.

In all regions, the Republican and Democrat parties are having a primary. Voters must choose the ballot of one party – Republican or Democrat.  Voters cannot participate in both primaries. Registrars urge voters to review and to know the candidates.
