From the Classroom to Church Hill

One of the unique things about growing up in Richmond is that our children think nothing of living right where significant historical moments happened. This year, as my daughter is in fourth grade, her social studies course is Virginia Studies, and she had to memorize Patrick Henry’s “give me liberty or give me death” speech.

It’s pretty incredible that the Second Virginia Convention, where Henry delivered his famous speech, was at St. John’s Church, right here in Richmond. – Church Hill to be exact And, best of all – public reenactments are held regularly at the church, bringing history to life!

If your child hasn’t studied Patrick Henry and the Second Virginia Convention of 1775, or you’d like to supplement their learning, I recommend reading Mystery on Church Hill by Stephen K. Smith. This is a book for ages 7-12, that travels with two brothers to a reenactment of Patrick Henry’s speech, but end up discovering much more about America’s founding fathers.

Once your child has enough background knowledge, it’s time to experience the public reenactment at St. John’s Church. The 45-minute presentation is engaging, and audience members are encouraged to join in with expressions like “aye,” “nay,” “well said Sir,” and other appropriate remarks from the time period. It’s like being transported straight to 1775! Hearing words from George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other historical figures my daughter read about in class was such an exciting experience!

My daughter absolutely loved the reenactment, and silently mouthed the entire speech along with Patrick Henry – what a real life learning experience! While there are no photos or videos permitted during the performance, the actors wait outside for photos and questions. I recommend this experience for children ages 6+, as the program says, “unruly children will be asked to leave.”

Tickets are required for reenactments. St. John’s also offers tours following the performance, for an additional fee.

We love family field trips, especially educational ones! We’d love to see and hear about the places in RVA that you love to visit with your family – tag us on social @rfmtoday!
