World Hand Drumming (African & Latin)

Have you always been drawn to the rhythm and energy of hand drumming but never quite knew where to start? World Hand Drumming at Sound Hall Studios is exactly where your percussion journey begins. Open to ages 13 and up, this class explores the authentic rhythms, techniques, and instruments of African and Latin percussion, including djembe, conga, clave, djun djun, bongos, and shekere. Whether you’ve never touched a drum before or have been curious about world percussion for years, this class meets you exactly where you are and lets you move at your own pace in a fun, relaxed, and welcoming environment. No prior experience required, just an interest in rhythm and community. All instruments are provided during class, so there’s nothing you need to bring to get started, though students are welcome to bring their own hand drum if they have one. Leading the class is Chris Thomas, a full-time percussion specialist based in Virginia with an extraordinary depth of experience across every area of percussion. He currently teaches at four institutions, including Longwood University, and performs with the Jazz Professors while directing multiple marching bands and percussion ensembles. A proud Pearl Drums and Innovative Percussion artist, Chris brings decades of performance and teaching experience to every class, and he can’t wait to take students on this new musical adventure.
