Spacebomb Music Camp

This coming July, after an overwhelmingly successful inaugural run last summer, Spacebomb Studio will again be hosting a series of music and recording day camps for the youth in our community. Led by Spacebomb’s own Cameron Ralston, who’s bass playing has sent him around the world and back many times, these five-day Summer Camps are specifically designed for musically inclined teenagers. This is a fabulous opportunity to learn all facets of music and recording in a small group environment from an outstanding teacher. All inside a world class studio down the street.

The week will focus on:

  • Universal music fundamentals
  • Writing, arranging and rehearsing original music
  • Recording original music
  • Production and Post-Production techniques
  • Improvisation, Exploration and Experimentation
  • Musicianship
  • Collaboration, Delegation and the Spirit of Teamwork in a pro studio environment
  • Listening, Analysis and Discussion

We will be writing music, arranging and rehearsing it as a group, recording the music we rehearse, making production decisions together, overdubbing and layering onto the music, and experimenting in the studio before, during and after we record. All of this will be interspersed with listening sessions as well as conversation about music’s historical context and its place in our current culture. Students will take home professional studio-quality CD and Digital Streaming Platform-ready recordings of material created, recorded and produced together throughout the week. This is an exceptionally unique opportunity for young musicians, singers, songwriters and producers seeking a wildly creative, specialized and deeply immersive group learning experience with guidance and wisdom from a real world working professional. All housed in Spacebomb’s legendary Richmond studio.

Cameron Ralston is co-founder of and in-house bassist/producer for Spacebomb. As the bass playing anchor of the Spacebomb House Band, he can be heard on countless recordings made in Spacebomb’s Richmond studio. An original and longtime member of Matthew E. White’s touring and recording band, Cameron’s eclectic list of performance and recording credits also include Justin Vernon, k.d. Lang, Natalie Prass, Foxygen, Hiss Golden Messenger, Fruit Bats, Tim Heidecker, Lonnie Holley, Beth Orton, Aja Monet, Ben Watt, Bedouine, Skyway Man, Sam Evian, Love Canon, Bio Ritmo and many others. Cameron is one half of Revelators Sound System with MC Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger for which he is producer, multi-instrumentalist, and string and horn arranger. He is currently the bass player for GRAMMY-nominated folk supergroup Bonny Light Horseman, featuring Anais Mitchell (Hadestown, Big Red Machine), Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats, The Shins), and Josh Kaufman (Bob Weir, Taylor Swift). He has over 2 decades of performing experience and on any given night you can most likely find Cameron playing upright or electric bass somewhere on the globe.

TESTIMONIALS

“Lydia considers it a life changing experience. She really had never had the chance to play and talk music like that. It meant everything for her just to be around like minded musical kids. She really really enjoyed the mentorship you all offered. Your feedback meant a lot.”

-Leah H. parent)

“Our daughter had the most amazing experience at Spacebomb music camp. She was provided a personalized musical experience, adapted to the various abilities and interests of each person at the camp. We were most impressed by the cohesiveness of the group experience. Exploring music within a collective, with the guidance of such experts, was a powerful experience.”

-Donna B. (parent)

“Our son has been taking lessons and playing music for almost eight years; Spacebomb was an expansion of his musical universe and an opportunity he just can’t get anywhere else.  Cameron’s enthusiasm and ability to connect and inspire generated a fresh creative spark.”
