Summertime is the perfect opportunity to explore new to you libraries. Out of convenience, my family frequents the same Chesterfield County Public Library; however, during the summer we make a point to check out (pun intended) not only other CCPL branches, but other public libraries in our region.
Important to note, many library systems have reciprocity. So, for example, residents of Chesterfield County may obtain library cards for Henrico, Richmond, and other neighboring localities. Be sure to research the necessary documentation prior to requesting a library card. Learn more about how you can use the library!
Here are five local libraries to visit this summer:
Central Library
At the Central Library in Chesterfield, families will love the chance to check out books, games, and other library materials. In fact, toys are even available for check out! But, the real treat is actually behind the library, through Virginia Cooperative Extension. After you’ve picked up your library materials, head back to meet chickens, see a bee hive, and have a picnic. This educational experience offers a chance to see and learn about pollinators and other animals.
Fairfield Library
Recognized nationally for its parent-child carrels, designed so parents can work while little ones sleep or play in a connected space, Fairfield Library in Henrico is a work of art. I especially love the light wall in the children’s section, ready to read kits centered around a theme with a book and accompanying activities, and the attention to teens’ needs with a digital media lab, and video game borrowing opportunities.
Atlee Library
Located in Mechanicsville, the Atlee Library opened in 2020. With a large outdoor space, this location is ideal of picking out a few books and taking them outside to read to your little one. If your children are older, take advantage of the digital media lab or one of the study rooms.
Powhatan Library
While it may not be sleek and new, the Powhatan Library has plenty to offer families. The indoor space has toys to encourage imaginative play; thus, offering a change from the summer heat. Additionally, the library is accessible from Powhatan’s Fighting Creek Park, so you can start your outing at the park and take the trail straight to the library for a fun adventure. Want to see SMV’s Body Worlds Exhibit?! Powhatan Library has Science Museum of Virginia Family Pass available for check out.
West End
As part of Richmond City’s Public Library System, the West End Branch has a LEGO table, small toys, and a kind and welcoming staff. As a smaller library branch, this is an excellent option for families with sensory concerns as you won’t find it overly crowded or busy.
Most area libraries have copies of RFM available to take home, so be sure to ask where you can find your free copy!
As you venture to libraries in the Richmond region, tag us @rfmtoday! We love to see families enjoying all Richmond has to offer.
