As individuals, we challenge ourselves to find the perfect gift for friends, loved ones, and associates. As citizens, many of us also wish to experience the true meaning of the season by helping others in need. This year, GiveRichmond.Org can help you achieve both and make the most of your giving.

The Community Foundation recently unveiled GiveRichmond.org as a free community resource that promotes smart, transparent giving. Powered by Guidestar and supported by 14 local funders, the website invites Richmonders to “find your passion, learn about community issues, and give to causes you hold dear,” says Darcy Oman, president and CEO of TCF.

In a pilot program that will run through the end of the year, TCF is offering the program as a way to engage others in the true spirit of the season. Just make a donation on GiveRichmond.org and request a giving card in the dollar amount you choose – either electronically or in a printed certificate format. Pass it on to a friend, family member, colleague or client who will then designate a charity on GiveRichmond.org to benefit from your generosity.

According to Oman, this website can simplify holiday shopping and, perhaps, give it more meaning. “In honor of friends or loved ones, you can give a gift that will help children learn to read or support homeless persons as they transition to independence.

Or, with the GiveRichmond.org giving card program, you can let those same individuals choose how they wish to better our community,” Oman says.

GiveRichmond.org provides in-depth information about more than 200 local nonprofits – a number that is growing Daily. You can view an organization’s board list or financial history, and learn about its mission through pictures and videos.

The site is accessible for people of all ages, providing an opportunity for entire families to gain an understanding of community needs.

“Technology is increasingly influencing the way we live our lives and conduct our business. GiveRichmond.org provides the platform from which nonprofit organizations can articulate their stories. Over time, we anticipate that this will further strengthen the capacity of the charitable sector and expand philanthropy in our region,” says Oman.

Through donations and volunteer activities, families throughout Richmond can help to feed, educate, and empower those who are less fortunate. Whether you have a passion for the arts, education, heath care, or human services, you can research organizations whose missions mirror your interests and contribute to them directly from the website. You may also volunteer by contacting organizations with needs identified on their portraits or by linking to HandsOn Greater Richmond and ConnectSouthside.

“Although the hustle and bustle of the holidays will soon subside, the opportunity to strengthen our community is constant. Find your passion and give to what you believe in,” Oman says. “Visit GiveRichmond.org throughout the year to give back and give smart.”
