Sportable, Central Virginia’s premier adaptive sports club, is proud to introduce soccer to individuals with visual impairments, hosting a free Blind Soccer Clinic on Saturday, August 10, 12 to 2 p.m. at SCOR.
Led by U.S. National Blind Soccer player and U.S. Association of Blind Athletes ambassador Antoine Craig, the Sportable blind soccer clinic will focus on soccer fundamentals, drills, game play, and communication.
Ambulatory individuals of all ages with visual impairments are encouraged to attend. Registration is available now at Sportable.org.
“The sport of blind soccer is incredibly fast-paced and exciting,” commented Hunter Leemon, Sportable Chief Executive Officer. “Athletes use speed, strength, stamina, and spatial awareness to work together as a team and we are thrilled to bring the sport to individuals with visual impairments in Central Virginia.”
Blind soccer is played on a 40m x 20m field enclosed by kickboards or a physical barrier to indicate the boundaries of the playing area. Teams of five players, including a goalkeeper, work together to score goals using a ball modified with bells. Outfield players wear eyeshades, whereas goalkeepers can be sighted or partially sighted.
Played in more than sixty countries, blind soccer is the fastest-growing Paralympic sport in the world and has been contested in the Paralympic Games since 2004. Team USA will make its Paralympic debut as the host nation of the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
