Nestled in the heart of Carytown, bbgb is an independent bookshop specializing in children’s and YA literature. Apart from giving reader recommendations from their curated collection of contemporary and classic stories, bbgb regularly connects authors with local elementary and middle schools, and donates thousands of books each year to nonprofits specializing in children’s literacy.
This spring, bbgb is excited to offer its first scholarship of $1,000 to one high school senior in the Greater Richmond Area. This scholarship coincides with bbgb’s recently celebrated eleventh anniversary as an independent bookshop, and as the only children’s bookstore in Richmond.
“2021 marked our eleventh anniversary, and though it might seem like an odd one to be excited about, getting through these past two years has been a real test of strength for small businesses and indie bookstores in general,” said bbgb owner and founder Jill Stefanovich.
Stefanovich added that the scholarship is a way for the shop to give back to the community of readers it serves, the majority of whom are students. “Our goal with the application for the scholarship was to make the process as accessible as possible. No fees, GPA requirements or references, no required commitment to a four year university. All we ask for is the basic contact info of the student (or their parent’s if they’re under 18), plus a short essay on what book they think everyone in their community should read and why.”
The deadline to submit applications is May 1, 2022. The scholarship recipient will be contacted and announced on bbgb’s website May 15, 2022.
Applicants must be a high school senior attending school in Greater Richmond.
