Virginia Veterinary Medical Association Announces 2014 Distinguished Virginia Veterinarian Award
Dr. Richard Wilkes Receives Honor For Standard Of Excellence And Dedicated Service To The Profession Of Veterinary Medicine
The Virginia Veterinary Medical Association (VVMA) has announced that Richard Wilkes, D.V.M., of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, received the 2014 Distinguished Virginia Veterinarian award for his standard of excellence and dedicated service to the profession of veterinary medicine. Wilkes was presented with this prestigious award at the 2014 Virginia Veterinary Conference on Feb. 28.
Wilkes was a mixed animal veterinarian for more than 25 years, and his background in dairy production management medicine and ambulatory service has given him the ability to efficiently and effectively work alongside the Virginia veterinary practitioners and the state’s food animal industry. He has dedicated his time and leadership skills to improve animal agriculture industry regulations, and has worked tirelessly to advance animal disease traceability. Wilkes’ success is evident in his gathering of a coalition of State Veterinarians and obtaining federal funding to develop a Secure Milk Supply Plan for a multi-state region. He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, VVMA, Virginia Academy of Food Animal Practitioners, American Association of Bovine Practitioners, Southern Animal Health Association, U.S. Animal Health Association, and the National Association of State Animal Health Officials.
