Henrico County Recreation and Parks Wins Multiple Awards
The Henrico County Division of Recreation and Parks received five awards from the Virginia Recreation and Park Society at its annual conference, held Sept. 8-11 in Wintergreen.
Cindy Jo Daniel, Management Specialist, was awarded the premiere professional award, the Fellows Award, for her 30+ years of dedicated service to VRPS and the profession and for her numerous roles in leadership capacity with the Central Service Area, Annual Conference, and many other VRPS endeavors. VRPS President Cindy Roeder shares that “the VRPS Fellows Award is given only when a candidate who is highly deserving is nominated. This year, the VRPS Board of Directors voted both swiftly and unanimously. There is no question that Cindy Jo’s leadership, integrity and love of the profession warrants this highest of our awards. She has played a critical role in the foundation of the Central Service Area within VRPS and in the experiences of many members, who have themselves assumed leadership roles within the Society. While Cindy Jo maintains a quiet presence outside the limelight, it was time that she was recognized by her colleagues for her remarkable career and dedication to the Society.”
Jennifer Snead, Senior Adult Programs Supervisor, picked up the Presidents Awards, an award given at the discretion of the VRPS President to an individual who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in pursuit of the goals of VRPS. Jennifer is recognized for her over twenty years on the Virginia Senior Games Committee as well as her role as the 2012 Virginia Senior Games Chairperson. In particular, Jennifer helped Henrico County complete their 4-year rotation as the Virginia Senior Games host site. “Jennifer has been an important part of Virginia Senior Games for the duration of her career, beginning in her days as a university student. She took her commitment to an even higher level by serving as Chairperson for the past two years. In 2012, Virginia Senior Games achieved its highest registration numbers to date, which is testimony to both Jennifer’s leadership and the quality of the team she assembled to produce such an outstanding event. I greatly appreciate her time, energy, and dedication to our profession, our Society and our community.” (Cindy Roeder, VRPS President)
The Henrico Division of Recreation and Parks also received awards for a new recreation center, a renovated museum and a promotional project, all in the population category of 100,000+.
The Eastern Henrico Recreation Center was awarded the Best New Facility (Bricks and Mortar). A few highlights of the site include a beautiful 25,000+ square foot building with a multi-purpose gymnasium, fitness center, football stadium, playing fields, and shelter.
Virginia Randolph Museum was recognized as the Best New Renovation/Addition Award (Bricks and Mortar). This National Historic Landmark honors Miss Virginia Randolph, a Jeanes Supervising Teacher who devoted over 50 years to educating and nurturing Henrico’s African-American community.
The award for Best Promotional Effort-Specialty was given to the Facility Tour Kiosk project. Located in all Henrico County recreation centers, this kiosk allows visitors to take a virtual tour of all sites available for rent. Each site description includes directions, photos, room diagrams, and videos.
VRPS President Cindy Roeder offers her congratulations to all award winners, “The excellence of the award winning projects was evident and we offer our congratulations to each winner for their outstanding contributions to the profession and their community. Entries in every population category, from around the state, allow us to recognize the best in our business while raising the standards and quality of programs, facilities and events in every region.”
