Looking for a free family activity this summer? Los Trompos, a colorful interactive art installation featuring eight giant spinning tops inspired by traditional Mexican toys, is now open at Short Pump Town Center through July 12. More than just an attraction, the touring exhibit brings a vibrant celebration of Hispanic artistry and culture to the shopping center, offering a free, hands-on experience for all ages.

“Los Trompos” (“Spinning Tops” in Spanish) draws its inspiration from a toy that has been popular with children around the world for generations. This large-scale, interactive artistic installation engages visitors in a way that is both meaningful and playful. Unlike traditional public art installations that are meant to be viewed from a distance, Los Trompos encourages hands-on interaction. By pushing together to create momentum, you bring the sculptures to life, turning them into rotating gathering spaces that inspire movement, conversation, and connection.

The art installation has appeared in cities across Mexico, France, and the United States and is making its Richmond debut at Short Pump Town Center. The installation is free to attend and open during regular mall hours.

“People like living in a community that has rich culture, and these cultural events really get you to experience parts of the world that your kids are not typically exposed to,” said Michel Zajur, president and founder of the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “It’s wonderful for the Richmond community.”

“We value experiences that give people a reason to slow down, spend time together and experience something new,” said Marvin Snyder, senior general manager of Short Pump Town Center. “Bringing Los Trompos to Short Pump Town Center allows us to create moments of connection while celebrating the creativity and cultural heritage that inspired this installation.”

Plan Your Visit

Los Trompos will remain at Short Pump Town Center through July 12 and is free to attend, with no tickets required. Visitors of all ages are encouraged to take the tops for a spin, relax inside the colorful structures, and capture the perfect photo opportunity.
