Richmond Lacrosse Player Headed to Duke

Jamie Lockwood, Junior, Commits to play Goalie for Duke Blue Devils in 2015

STORM ELITE, a division of New World Sports, announced today that Jamie Lockwood, their leading lacrosse goalie, is an early commit to play Division I Lacrosse at Duke University beginning in the fall of 2015. Duke is located in Durham, North Carolina and is a member of the ACC.

Jamie, who is only a junior at Douglas Freeman High School, has been a standout in the lacrosse goalie position since earning a spot on the varsity squad her freshman year. Committed to improving her game, she joined the STORM club team in 2010 and began working one-on-one with former USA Goalie of 5 years, Barb D’Arcangelo. Jamie’s hard work paid off and she earned a position on the 2013 Mid-Atlantic National Team in 2013 while only a sophomore, as well as the USLA Richmond 2013 All Star High School Team. Academics at Duke should not be a problem for this future Blue Devil with a 4.93/4.0 GPA and First Team All-District with Academic Recognition 2013 winner. Jamie is also in the prestigious Leadership Program at Douglas Freeman.

Jamie made the STORM Elite Team this fall which is comprised of players from within STORM Travel. Head Coach Sue Murphy had this to say about Jamie, “We are thrilled to see Jamie recruited and verbally committed to Duke University Lacrosse. Jamie has worked extremely hard both in the classroom and on the field, mentored and trained by former USA goalie, Barb DiArcangelo. Coach DiArcangelo has trained other Division I & Division III All-Americans during her 13 year tenure in the central VA area. Jamie is a gem as a person and a teammate and has shown a consistency of overall development and passion to succeed that certainly has been gratifying to observe. Jamie continues to train with STORM Elite and also gives back to the game by coaching local youth who have the same love for the sport that she does. We wish for Jamie and her family great success in her junior and senior seasons at Freeman High School. It has been our pleasure to coach, mentor and get to know Jamie and her supportive family.”

Jamie commented on the importance of what STORM has done for her: “This is my fifth year playing for Storm, and Storm has taken my play to the next level! I was simply a recreational player before meeting Sue Murphy and Barb D’Arcangelo. They have not only taught me lacrosse skills, but how to be poised in the goal, keep a positive attitude even when the game is not going well and how to show respect for the referees, coaches and other players.”
On attending Duke, she said, “I wanted a college that not only had a good lacrosse program with coaches that had a similar frame of mind to my STORM coaches, but also had a strong academic program. As far as academics, I am considering engineering or environmental sciences; Duke has excellent programs in both areas. I feel very fortunate. I am a good student, but not sure that my academic performance alone would have put me over the edge to get into an institution like Duke. My lacrosse skills have definitely opened this door for me, and STORM has been the key to obtaining those skills!”

STORM is a lacrosse club which offers training and travel teams to middle school through high school girls in the central VA region year round. This year STORM has 5 players committed to DI schools (Duke [2], St. Mary’s of California, George Washington and ODU) and 4 players committed to play DIII ( Mary Washington [2], Shenandoah University, CNU [2], and Greensboro College ). For the 2013 Mid-Atlantic National Team, STORM had 5 players selected out of 18 players statewide. STORM is directed by Sue Murphy and Barb DiArcangelo both former college All-Americans, USA Players, and DI college coaches.
