Spotlight Acro and Cheer Enters Market

Program is the first in Central Virginia to offer this exciting sport!

Acrobatic gymnastics (Acro), a sport that combines the strength of gymnastics, the artistry of ballet, and the wow factor of a circus stunt, is now in Richmond. An international sport, top acro athletes have gone on to perform with Cirque Du Soleil, Acro Army, and other nationally known productions and companies.

Spotlight Acro and Cheer, which opened in Mechanicsville in June, is now recruiting young athletes to join this exciting sport. Acro can be started at any age and is open to girls and boys.

  • Acro involves teams of two to four gymnasts working together to perform floor routines set to music.
  • Routines involve tumbling, strength, flexibility, balance, and at the upper levels, high-flying stunts.
  • Acro is great for girls and boys of all ages and sizes.
  • Unlike many competitive sports, you don’t have to start at an extremely early age to excel.
  • If your child loves tumbling, he or she should try acro.

Competitive acro is an internationally recognized sport operating under the guidance of USA Gymnastics.

Spotlight Acro and Cheer owner Susan Salyer, who competed as a gymnast herself, watched her niece compete in acro for years, and saw how much she loved and benefited from the sport.

“I kept thinking, I wish we’d had this when I was a gymnast, and someone needs to bring this to Richmond!” Finally, after extensive training with a world-class acrobatics coach and a more than a year of planning, she is thrilled to be doing just that.

“We are also looking forward to offering cheerleading classes, preschool through high school, in this part of town,” Salyer added.

Spotlight Acro and Cheer is located at 6078 Mechanicsville Turnpike (east of Lee Davis HS). They offer acro, tumbling, and cheerleading classes for kids ages three to eighteen, as well as birthday parties, summer camps (including tumbling and fun and fitness camps) and private lessons. To learn more about Spotlight Acro and Cheer or to register; visit SpotlightAcro.com or call (804) 453-ACRO.
