This summer, three camps at Virginia House invite children to explore the museum, collections, and grounds of this wonderful historic home, brought from England to Richmond by Ambassador Alexander Weddell and his wife, Virginia, in the 1920s. Travel to distant lands as a “junior ambassador” and experience the various cultures and daily life in countries where Weddell served in the US Foreign Service; or spend a week investigating the different types of gardens located on the expansive grounds while learning gardening practices to use at home. All three camps encourage children to explore, learn, and create during an unforgettable week in this unique environment.

There are still spaces available for this brilliant summer camp experience at the Virginia Historical Society’s Virginia House. Register your child today for an unforgettable summer experience at an English mansion. Reservations required; please call 804.353.4251 or email tbryan@vahistorical.org.

Jr. Ambassador Passport Travels Summer Camp

July 14–18 (9 a.m.–3 p.m.)

During the week-long educational program, campers aged 7–10 will explore the culture, food, geography, and music from countries where Alexander Weddell (Virginia House owner and resident from 1928 to 1948) served as a diplomat. Each day focuses on a different country, giving children the opportunity to compare and contrast customs and traditions. At the end of the week, campers will receive a passport certificate and share what they’ve learned with family and staff at a special party. Learn more about Jr. Ambassador Passport Travels Summer Camp.

Jr. Master Gardener Summer Camp
July 28–August 1 (9 a.m.–3 p.m.)

The newest summer camp at Virginia House invites campers aged 9–11 to embark on an in-depth exploration of gardening in Virginia. Throughout the week, participants will investigate the museum’sexpansive gardens and grounds to learn first hand about habitats, native plants, eco-friendly gardening, composting, and recycling. Campers will bring home a small garden of their own and ornaments crafted for outside use. At the end of the week, campers will share what they’ve learned with family and staff at a garden-themed party. Learn more about Jr. Master Gardener Summer Camp.

Diggin’ in the Dirt Summer Camp
August 4–8 (9 a.m.–3 p.m.)

This day camp introduces participants to a variety of educational and craft activities. During the week-long program, campers aged 6–8 learn about Virginia plants, weather, and gardening. Projects include creating butterfly gardens, growing herbs, making stepping stones, learning cloud types, and weather charting. The week concludes with a Mad Hatter’s tea party hosted by the camp participants for family and staff, during which craft projects are presented and certificates distributed. Learn more about Diggin’ in the Dirt Summer Camp.
