For many Richmond families, summer means finding ways to get kids outside, exploring and learning through experience. James River Association’s Summer Camps offer just that — a chance for children to spend their days discovering wildlife, playing in nature, and building a real connection to the James River.
In Richmond, camps are hosted along the river at the James A. Buzzard River Education Center on Dock Street, a waterfront hub for environmental education located near Great Shiplock Park. From this unique location, campers can step outside and immediately explore river habitats, wooded trails, and shoreline ecosystems.
Families across the region can also join the adventure at JRA camp locations in Lynchburg, Williamsburg and Hampton, helping kids throughout the James River watershed experience the river up close.
A Summer Full of Discovery

James River Association camps combine classic summer fun with hands-on science and outdoor exploration. Programs run throughout the summer with both half-day and full-day options.
Campers learn by doing — catching fish, observing birds and insects, creating nature-inspired art, exploring riverbanks, and learning how wildlife and waterways are connected. Activities are designed to spark curiosity while helping kids feel comfortable outdoors and confident in their abilities.
The camps welcome a wide range of ages from 5-18, with programs designed for elementary through high school students.
Camps Designed for Every Age

Younger campers (ages 5–8) can begin their river adventure in the Playful Otter program, where imagination and curiosity lead the way. Through games, art projects, and gentle exploration, kids discover the plants, animals, and habitats that make the James River special.
For ages 9–11, Mighty Sturgeon camps offer deeper exploration of the river ecosystem. Campers might learn how to fish, investigate wildlife habitats, test water quality, or hike nearby trails while learning about the science of rivers and streams.
Older youth can continue the adventure through Soaring Osprey camps and high school expeditions, where teens sharpen outdoor skills, paddle new waterways, and explore conservation challenges while building leadership and teamwork skills.
Learning That Sticks

While campers are busy exploring and playing, they’re also building something lasting: a connection to the natural world.
James River Association camps are built around the idea that when kids experience nature firsthand, they’re more likely to care about protecting it. By exploring the James River and its wildlife up close, campers gain confidence, independence, and a sense of stewardship for Virginia’s waterways.
For families looking for a summer experience filled with fresh air, curiosity, and real adventure, a week on the James River might just become the highlight of the season. To learn more, visit their website.
