The Golden Goose opens July 8, 2016, at Virginia Rep’s Children’s Theatre at Willow Lawn. Based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale, this musical play adaptation is written and directed by Ford Flannagan, with music and lyrics by Michael and K Strong, and musical arrangements by Michael Strong.
The show runs through August 7, with morning matinee performances each Tuesday through Saturday, and additional performances on the weekends.
Goldie the Goose is portrayed by Rachel Marrs, most recently seen on Virginia Rep’s MainStage in Gypsy. Marrs has spent the last several semesters on tour with Virginia Rep, acting in educational children’s shows including Hugs and Kisses and The Frog Prince.
Austin Taylor Smith, who made his Virginia Rep debut in the hit musical Croaker, plays Simpleton. Maddie Gunter, a recent graduate of St. Catherine’s School and a newcomer to Virginia Rep, will portray the Princess.
Also rounding out the cast are Donna Marie Miller, seen in The Charitable Sisterhood of the Second Trinity VictoryChurch at Hanover Tavern and PJ Freebourn, featured in last year’s Go Dog, Go!
This update of the classic fairytale tells the story of Simpleton triumphing over many obstacles to reach the Golden Goose, showing that even the meek among us have great things to offer. With its catchy score, hilarious characters, and a charming lesson, The Golden Goose is suitable for the youngest theatre audiences recommended for ages three and up.
