The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is excited to announce that the museum is adding a third day to its extended hours. In addition to remaining open until 9 pm on Thursdays and Fridays, starting this week on Oct. 30, VMFA will stay open until 9 pm on Wednesdays. The extended hours offer VMFA visitors more time to explore the permanent collection, experience world-class special exhibitions, shop and dine.
“Since the expansion in 2010, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has been open 365 days a year with free general admission, making it among the best and most accessible art museums anywhere,” says Alex Nyerges, VMFA director and CEO.
The additional day of extended hours arrives just in time for the holiday season and for those seeking entertainment and cultural activities with family and friends. Best Café will feature food and drink specials in a casual setting. Amuse Restaurant will be open for fine dining; reservations are recommended. The VMFA Shop, which has everything from books and jewelry to notecards and home accessories, will treat visitors to free giveaways on select Wednesday evenings.
In addition, the extended hours provide convenience for visitors to explore Edward Hopper and the American Hotel, on view Oct. 26 through Feb. 23. The highly anticipated exhibition is the first investigation of Hopper’s depictions of hospitality settings. VMFA is the only East Coast venue for this groundbreaking and immersive art experience.
About the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia, is one of the largest comprehensive art museums in the United States. VMFA, which opened in 1936, is a state agency and privately endowed educational institution. Its purpose is to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret art, and to encourage the study of the arts. Through the Office of Statewide Partnerships program, the museum offers curated exhibitions, arts-related audiovisual programs, symposia, lectures, conferences and workshops by visual and performing artists. In addition to presenting a wide array of special exhibitions, the museum provides visitors with the opportunity to experience a global collection of art that spans more than 6,000 years. VMFA’s permanent holdings encompass nearly 40,000 artworks, including the largest public collection of Fabergé outside of Russia, the finest collection of Art Nouveau outside of Paris, and one of the nation’s finest collections of American art. VMFA is also home to important collections of Chinese art, English silver, French Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, British sporting and modern and contemporary art, as well as renowned South Asian, Himalayan and African art. In May 2010, VMFA opened its doors to the public after a transformative expansion, the largest in its history.
