Throughout the month of May, the National Children’s Museum (NCM) will continue to pay tribute to the areas that serve as the backbone of the Museum’s programmatic core. Programs and activities will honor the arts, civic engagement, the environment, global citizenship, health and well-being and play – subjects that are critical to early learning and whole child development, and integral in helping the Museum with its mission to inspire children to care about and improve the world.
All programs will take place at the National Children’s Museum at 151 St. George Blvd. at National Harbor in Prince George’s County, Md. Tickets may be purchased at the NCM box office or online at www.ncm.museum.
Oceanic Storytime
Saturday-Sunday, May 4-5,
10:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
The Museum’s youngest visitors will have an opportunity to experience the wonders of the ocean with two books at storytime: Kevin Sherry’s I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean and Jan Peck’s Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea. Related activities in the Center for Learning and Innovation include scuba mask-making, a sensory water table and exploring what comes from the sea.
Monday Morning Yoga
May 6, 13, 20, 11:30 a.m.-noon
It’s never too early to learn the mental and physical benefits of yoga! Families can cap off their Monday morning visits with invigorating stretches and yoga-inspired poses. Each class takes place in the NCM Theatre.
NCM Storytime: Small, Small Pond by Denise Fleming
Monday, May 6 and Saturday-Sunday, May 11-12
10:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Visitors ages 3 and under will learn that even the smallest environments can provide a rich ecosystem for inhabitants of all sizes. The storytime scheduled for Monday, May 6 will take place in the Center for Learning and Innovation, while the Saturday and Sunday storytimes will occur in the NCM Theatre. After each storytime, families can head to the Center for Learning and Innovation to explore pond life.
Storytime and Language Workshop with Language Planet
Saturday, May 11, 11:30 a.m.-noon
Native Spanish-speaking instructors will lead this unique and interactive storytime featuring Ricitos de oro y los Tres Osos (Goldilocks and the Three Bears). The performance will start with a welcome song and instructors will use props to help children understand this classic story in a whole new language. Language Planet, a D.C.-based foreign language program designed exclusively for young children, believes that full immersion is critical to a child’s second language absorption. Meet Stuffee: Exploring the Human Body
Saturday-Sunday, May 11-12, 18-19, 25-26
Families can explore the inner workings of the human body with Stuffee, the latest addition to the National Children’s Museum’s collection. At 7’2’’, this “big kid” will give children a new, larger-than-life perspective on what goes on underneath our skin. Visitors can then use what they’ve learned to make human body crafts. Both programs will take place in the Center for Learning and Innovation.
Free Family Night sponsored by GEICO
Thursday, May 16, 5-8 p.m.
Enjoy free admission to the museum as well as hands-on activities and interactive play in the NCM Theatre and exhibit areas. May’s Free Family Night will include programs that celebrate the human body. Please visitwww.ncm.museum for more information on the free tickets and special programs.
NCM Storytime: Go, Dog, Go! by P.D. Eastman
Monday, May 27, 10:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Families will have three opportunities to catch storytime with P.D. Eastman’s beloved classic, Go Dog Go! Each session takes place in the Center for Learning and Innovation and is accompanied by an interactive program that explores the things around us that stop and go.
The museum is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. From May 31 through June 29, the museum will offer extended hours (10 a.m. to 8 p.m.) every Friday. Additional summer hours may be announced at a later date.
Standard admission is $10 per child or adult and $8 for seniors ages 65 and up. There is no cost of admission for infants 12 months or younger. The museum also offers discounts for senior citizens, AAA members and active duty military families.
