Happy New Year From All of Us at RFM!

It was touch and go for a while there, but by the time the big day arrived, we had done it all. We shopped and wrapped and sang carols and baked (Or did we? Check out the poll results on page 8 to find out!) And visited those awesomely-decorated houses all around RVA.

Chances are, your most-cherished memories from the holidays weren’t the gifts that were given or garnered, but instead the special family moments that perhaps weren’t even planned.Nestling together on the couch watching Frosty the Snowman… marveling at the wonder on your kids’ faces when the car rounded the corner to greet the James Center reindeer… singing “Joy to the World” together in church…looking on as Grandma and your daughter perfected a family cookie recipe. I hope your holiday memories will last a lifetime. I know ours will.

I never quite got used to writing 2012, and here we are in 2013, much to my husband’s dismay. Although he’d have to admit that it beats the alternative (which I guess would mean that those darn Mayans were right!), he does have a touch of triskaidekaphobia, so this new year will take an extra bit of getting used to for him. Hotels, airlines, and even some city streets and shopping lines help him avoid it with a clever numbering scheme, but there’s no getting around that superstitious number (at least I hope not, Honey!) – twenty thirteen has arrived!

How do you feel about New Year’s resolutions? Part of me thinks they are great opportunities to start fresh, turn over new leaves, and make positive changes in our lives. But another, perhaps larger, part of me thinks we are setting ourselves up for failure, attempting to make changes that have never been within our grasp any other part of the year. My usual list is probably similar to many: eat better, exercise more, figure out how to organize all of the digital pictures and videos, finish the baby books that were started six years ago, stay in better touch with far away friends and family. Adding to my list this year will be one that I know I can keep – tell my family I love them every single day and don’t take one moment of our lives together for granted.

All the best to you, our faithful readers (and our new ones!), in this new year, and always.
