It’s so nice to have more daylight in the evenings and warmer temps during the days, as we welcome spring in Richmond. And you know what that means? Summer is right around the corner.
If you have school-aged kids, it’s time to start planning for ways to keep them busy over the summer, and this issue of RFM has you covered. There are tons of summer camp ideas throughout this issue for kids of all ages – from ballet to robotics, from sports to performing arts, and everything in between. On page 24, this issue’s Real Mom Alaina Wong-Canissario has six strategies for choosing summer camps for your kids. Spring break is coming for families with school-aged kids, and if you don’t have a trip planned for this year, this issue has some great ideas for day and overnight trips right here in Virginia. Check out Brandy Centolanza’s article, beginning on page 54, for tips on finding adventure across our state, including recommendations for hiking, biking, places to eat, and much more. And of course, the jam-packed RFM calendar, beginning on page 68, is filled with local events (even spring break camps!) to keep everyone in your family entertained. There are even more events on our online calendar – we just couldn’t fit them all in here – so be sure to check out our website whenever you’re looking for something fun to do, with or without the kids.
Another spring tradition in RVA that we’re featuring in this issue is one that puts Richmond on the international stage in front of millions of spectators across the globe – NASCAR! We’re thrilled to feature Lori Waran, Richmond Raceway’s first ever woman president, on this issue’s cover. We loved learning more about her and her family in Joan Tupponce’s interview, beginning on page 28. I’ve been a big fan of Lori’s for years, ever since we were both publishers of free local publications, back when she was at Style Weekly, and it’s been so much fun watching her take the helm at the racetrack. Whether you’re a racing fan or not, you’ll be inspired by her story, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she doesn’t convince you to give NASCAR a try this Easter weekend!
