Wouldn’t you like to know?

Every once in a while, I’ll find a local Richmonder we’d all like to know a bit morabout. Same questions each time, from the Prying Publisher (that’s me!) and the answers are just for you.

This month, I talked to Robin Starr, chief executive officer of the Richmond SPCA, mother of a teen, wife, and former practicing attorney. As a member of the SPCA’s board of directors, Robin’s commitment to animal welfare was integral in helping Richmond raise over $14 million to build one of the country’s most highly regarded humane centers. “Of course, our first responsibility was to the animals, but we also sought to create a humane center that would be an inviting place for human families to visit,” Robin said.

Under her leadership, the SPCA transitioned to a no-kill model two years ahead of its original goal of 2008, making Richmond one of the four safest places in the country for homeless pets. Today, Robin speaks at national seminars and consults with communities seeking to put the Richmond model in place. She is also a trustee of the Richmond Ballet and a member of the Virginia State Bar

Mountains or beach?
Of those two, I would say beach, but I really like vacationing in cities where there are museums, ballet and theater, and other things to do.

Dogs or cats?
Are you kidding…both! My family has three dogs and four cats.

Blackberry or iPhone?
iPhone – which I adore.

What book is on your nightstand right now?
Noah’s Compass by Anne Tyler, who is one of my favorite authors.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what food would you want to grow on trees?
Really good bagels.

Same island – what’s the one CD you would want to have with you?
Frank Sinatra: The Reprise Years

What’s the last song you downloaded to your iPod?
An excerpt from the ballet “Giselle” that my daughter is dancing now.

Favorite Richmond restaurant to take the whole family?
Lemaire at the Jefferson

What is your favorite way to spend a rainy Sunday?
Reading and watching DVDs

What is your favorite vacation destination?
London and the English countryside

What is your energy source?
My family and pets – well, they really are included in my family.

Finish this sentence: “My family loves it when I…
make their favorite pasta casserole with cheese and roasted vegetables

Favorite family day outing?
To Washington to shop, go to dance performances at the Kennedy Center, and try out new restaurants

Readers will be surprised to know…
I adore ice cream and, from time to time, I take the management staff of the Richmond SPCA out to Baskin-Robbins on Broad Street to have ice cream for lunch.
