The holiday season is once again upon us, but as I type this a couple of weeks before you’ll see it, I’m still in the midst of a different family celebration – my mom’s 90th birthday!
The day itself was filled with family and joy and presents and cake and frankly, a little amazement all around that she made it to such a big milestone. In the weeks leading up to the big day, she kept telling us that she didn’t want to do anything to celebrate, but we weren’t about to let the day go by without some major fanfare. And we knew she didn’t really mean it anyway; she just didn’t want us to go to any trouble (if that’s not classic “mom” thinking, always thinking of others). From the moment she opened her eyes that day until her head hit the pillow late last night, she reveled in the attention – from the visits and calls to the decorations and gifts to the waitstaff serenading her in the restaurant. She even gave her onlookers a little pageant wave as they wrapped up their song, a move we’d never seen from her over all these years. It might have been the cutest thing I’ve ever witnessed.
I have so much gratitude for the gift that is my mom, and as I wrap up this issue of RFM, I can’t help but think of how different my life would be if she hadn’t moved us to Richmond from the Eastern Shore of Maryland back when I was in the fifth grade. For starters, there would be no Richmond Family Magazine, so thanks, Mom, for making this issue possible!
And a fabulous issue it is, so let’s get into it:
We’re so excited to feature none other than the Holderness Family (page 20), and we know you’re going to love getting the backstory on this social media supercouple. I’ve followed them since their first Christmas jammies video, and I’m always amazed that they somehow manage to put into words – or song – exactly what I’m thinking at any point in time (and in the most hilarious way!).
Also, we’re taking you inside Feed More’s beautiful new headquarters (page 36) as the team there heads into one of their busiest times of year, and we’ll let you know how you can help them make sure no one goes hungry this holiday season.
Plus, we have your RVA holiday bucket list! Christine has rounded up some of her favorite holiday sites, events, and activities to help you have your most festive season yet (page 52), and the RFM calendar (beginning on page 60) is packed with holiday happenings, too.
From all of us at RFM, happy holidays!
