Nature Self-Portrait

Make Unique Artwork from the Earth

Materials

  • Wood slab (or paper, cardboard, or the ground)
  • Picnic blanket
  • Bag to collect treasures
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or liquid glue
  • Small mirror (or a camera on selfie-mode)
  • Nature objects (sticks, rocks, leaves, flowers, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Put your shoes on, grab a bag for your treasures, and head outside!
  2. On your walk, be on the lookout for nature items that speak to you. This could be petals, leaves, tree bark, sticks, rocks, and so much more. When picking the nature items, be gentle and only take what you need. Make sure you leave enough to share with other people and our pollinators.
  3. Once you are done with your walk, you can either set up a picnic blanket and complete the project outside or bring it inside and finish there.
  4. Empty your collection bag and sort through the materials. You can organize them by type of materials (a pile of leaves, a pile of petals, etc.) by shape (circular, triangular, oval, etc.) or by color (a pile of orange, a pile of red, etc.).
  5. For the base for your project, you can use paper, cardboard, wood slab, or simply the ground. Lay this down in front of you. Look in your small mirror and think about the features on your face. What shape are your eyes? Is there hair in other places besides on top of your head? What do your lips look like? What shape is your nose? Now, look at the nature materials. Do any of the items resemble the shape of your eyes? Could any of the materials work for hair? Lay down the nature materials to create an image of your face. Feel free to cut the materials to match better with your face. If you want, you can glue down your creation and save it.
  6. Tell your adult about your creation! Why did you choose the materials you did? Can you talk about how you made it? What did you notice about your own face and its uniqueness? We are all different, and that is great!
