Jacob Lawrence depicted the history of African Americans in his artwork. His series, The Legend of John Brown, is on display at VMFA through mid-June. Use these easy steps to depict your own history in a unique book all about you or something you’ve learned about.

What you need:

  • Large construction paper (18×12”)
  • Wooden dowel, about 3 inches long
  • Medium-size rubber band
  • Hole punch
  • Crayons, markers, pencils
  • Decorative paper
  • Letter stamps

What you do:

1. Fold paper in half length-wise, and cut along the crease. You have two pieces of 18 x 6”paper.
  2. Stack the two sheets of paper and fold in half again, like a book.
  3. Keep your paper folded, and place the dowel half an inch away from the fold. Mark each end of the dowel with a pencil.
   4. Punch two holes, each one half inch from your pencil marks.
5. Pinch a portion of your rubber band so that it makes a teardrop and thread it through one hole.
  6. Place your dowel through the teardrop. Do the same thing to the other side and thread it through the second hole.
  7. As you do this, the teardrop rubber band around the dowel should tighten. Once it does, place the other end of the dowel through the second teardrop.8. Now fill the pages of your book.

9. Cut decorative papers to the size of your book, and glue to the front and back.

10. Put your title and author’s name on a smaller piece of paper using letter stamps.

11. Glue on front cover and let dry.
