Have Funn, Go Nuts – A Family Guide for Richmond Flying Squirrels Games

Richmond Flying Squirrels games are a quintessential summer activity for Richmond families, but taking kids for the first time can be daunting. We created this guide to help you plan your family’s experience at The Diamond. With these helpful tips, you’ll really be able to have a ball at the game!

For Parents of Babies and Toddlers

I am a big proponent of parents not missing out on things they enjoy once they have kids, and Flying Squirrels games are no exception. Bring your kiddos along when they’re really young to create a fun summer tradition.

As far as packing for your outing with young kids, diaper bags are permitted. You will also want to bring empty water bottles to fill up (there are water filling stations) once you arrive. If you’re nursing, the Nursing Nest is in the store on the main concourse. This is a calm room where you can feed and change your baby.

I also recommend bringing small snacks (permitted, but staff will check your bag), a change of clothes, and extra diapers.

When my kids were very young, we preferred to go to the Sunday games as part of the Squirrels Tails Kids Club. Since tickets to Sunday games are free as Kids Club members, it felt like no big deal if we needed to leave early.

For Parents of Big Kids

Once you’ve graduated from a diaper bag, but you still need a big to haul your personal effects, you’ll need a clear bag. I purchased one for less than $10 on Amazon. It carries water bottles for the kids, my wallet, and phone.

Ages 14 and under can register for the Kids Club, and having older kids means they’re more likely to stay for the entire game. So, if you attend a Sunday game with your Kid’s Club membership, make sure you allow time for the kids to run the bases after the game and play catch on the field before the game.

If you purchase tickets to a game that features fireworks following the game, be aware that it will be a later night. For these games, I suggest arriving after the game has started unless your children are very passionate about baseball. This way you’re not sitting quite as long and the kids aren’t asking, “How much longer ’til fireworks?” for an entire baseball game (just part of it!).

General Tips

As far as budgeting, keep in mind parking there is a parking fee, and concessions can add up quickly. We typically let the kids each choose one snack (pretzel, hot dog, ice cream), and that’s it.

Strollers are permitted. Be sure to ask where the elevators are when you arrive. If you prefer, wear your baby in a carrier.

For those with noise sensitivity, pack noise cancelling headphones.

Have fun, but pay attention. Keep an eye on those foul balls. Seats behind home base and club seats have a tall net in front of them, but you’ll still need to be alert.

If your kids come to love Flying Squirrels games, look into hosting a birthday party at The Diamond. For those who love baseball, throwing the first pitch and spending the day at the ballpark is a dream come true!

Be sure to check out Giveaways Page and follow us on social! We often run contests for our readers to win club level seats for a Flying Squirrels game!
