Beat the Heat With Unique Ice Cream Experiences

Summer is nearly synonymous with ice cream in our family, and we love to try new ice cream shops around RVA. There are several delicious ice cream eateries with nearby playgrounds – read about them in this post! If you’re looking to try some unique ice cream experiences, this summer, check these out!

Richland’s Dairy

Located in Dinwiddie County, Richland’s Dairy Farm has an on site creamery that allows visitors a transparent look into milk. You can actual look through the windows into the milk plant to see where milk is pasteurized and bottled. It’s pretty cool to watch the process, and the kids love it, too!

Beyond the experience itself, the ice cream tastes wonderful. We enjoy sitting outside where there are toys, rocking chairs and games to play.

Doumar’s Cones and BBQ

Doumar’s Cones and BBQ is home to history and yummy treats. In 1905, Abe Doumar built the four-iron waffle machine!  If you visit on a nice day, you will find a member of the Doumar family and the waffle machine parked right outside of the diner, so your family can watch the magic happen from the car.

Adding to the experience is the service. We love sitting in the car while the server takes our order and delivers it right to us! It’s nostalgic, fun, and of course, the ice cream is tasty, too!

Doumar’s is in Norfolk. Add on a trip to the Chrysler Museum or Virginia Zoo to make it a day trip!

Mister Softee

Did you know you can actually request an ice cream truck to come to your neighborhood, pool, or community center? For a fun day that will get the kids excited, reach out to Mister Softee. You can request the truck for the venues mentioned above, and the truck will stop by (if you request in advance), or you can reserve it for a special event, like a birthday party, church event, or fundraiser. I suggest reaching out to Mister Softee now to allow time for planning.

If you don’t make plans for the truck to come to you, go find it! Simply follow Mister Softee on Facebook. The page shows where the truck will be and the times, so you could surprise your kiddos by picking up a quick treat!

Have more ice cream spots you love?! Be sure to share them with us on social @rfmtoday!
