One of the wonderful things about living in RVA (and there are many), is that we are equidistant from both the beach and the mountains. If you’re new to the area, you may have heard that this is one of the blessings of living here, but maybe you’re like my parents when they first moved here. People would say, “we’re going to the beach,” and my parents would think, “which beach?” They did not realize “the beach” was a general reference to one of the many beaches within just a couple hours of Richmond. On the other hand, Richmonders have the opportunity to take in gorgeous mountain views by driving only a couple hours as well. We are in the fortunate position of not having to choose between day trips to the beach or mountains – we can experience both, separately of course.
Whether you’re planning a beach or mountain day trip, I’ve got you covered with family-friendly suggestions for both!
Beach Day Trip Recommendations
Each of these beaches meet my criteria for a family-friendly beach:
- Short walk from the parking lot to beach
- Manageable crowds
- Bathroom access
- Overall feeling of safety, comfort
First Landing State Park
Located at the northern end of Virginia Beach, First Landing State Park is actually considered part of the Chesapeake Bay, not Virginia Beach. Because it’s the bay, the waves are much smaller; thus, a safer way for young children to play than a beach with large waves that can easily topple them right over.
First Landing also has a boardwalk from the parking lot to the beach, making it easy to haul a wagon or stroller from your car to the beach. Further, there are wheelchairs made specifically for pushing through the sand available in the visitor’s center.
Little Island Park
A large playground is directly between the parking lot and beach at Little Island Park. This is one of those ingenious details that makes it much easier on parents and caregivers unpacking the car. I let my children play while I corral the beach gear. After the 2.5 hour ride to Sandbridge, where Little Island Park is located, the playground is a much needed outlet for the kids.
There are also large, covered picnic pavilions between the parking lot and beach so you could eat your lunch here. This is a popular spot for families, and you’ll find many children riding the waves with boogie boards.
Community Beach
At Community Beach Park you will find a new, inclusive playground, large parking lot, and picnic pavilion. Skip the traffic of the tunnel to Virginia Beach, and spend a day splashing and building sand castles here in Norfolk. And, one of the best parts – there is no parking fee.
Mountain Recommendations
Here are my suggestions for those who want to take a trip to the mountains. All of these locations are family-friendly and offer that fresh mountain air. Each of these locations meets the following criteria:
- 2.5 hours or less from Richmond
- Other nearby activities
- Opportunities for outdoor recreation
Buzzards Rock at Read Mountain
Looking for a hike for older children? This is it! And it’s filled with opportunities to play in nature, and an incline just challenging enough, plus the summit, Buzzards Rock at Read Mountain Preserve is known as one of the best views in the Roanoke Valley.
Also in Roanoke is the famous Roanoke Star, atop Mill Mountain. You can drive, walk, or bike to the star. From here, you’ll take in stunning views of the city of Roanoke.
Rockfish Valley Foundation
I know the name has the word valley, and we’re talking about mountains, but the mountain views in the short loop hike are breathtaking! Plus, accessing the trail from Spruce Creek Park provides children a chance to play at the park’s natural playground, or splash in the creek. If you want to extend your trip, make a reservation at one of the cabins or campsites at Love Ridge Mountain Lodging.
Wildrock
A haven for outdoor play, Wildrock is located in Crozet, Virginia. With several stations of open, nature play, Wildrock is a fun day trip. The best part, though, is hiking to the actual Wildrock and taking in the gorgeous scenery.
