This has got to be the most memorable “lodging” we’ve stayed at on a vacation. I absolutely loved staying at Love Ridge Mountain Lodging on our four day trip to the mountains.
We stayed in Hanging Rock cabin, which was perfect for our family of 4. There’s a TV (no cable, so we brought DVDs from our local library), large tub/shower, queen bed, and a room with bunk beds. Hanging Rock Cabin is ideal for a small family or a couple’s getaway as it is quite cozy, offering one bathroom, with a large tub/shower. My kids especially loved their bunk beds, and the comfy couch.
I loved it because not only was it cozy and beautiful, it was an economical way to travel. We packed all our food and used the kitchen, and grill everyday. My kids LOVED griling their own hotdogs and making s’mores.
Our cabin was also very close to the kid’s play area – an open space with swings, an obstacle course, and picnic tables. I felt totally comfortable letting my kids play there while I was in the cabin.
Other fun: Love Ridge has trails, an ampitheater, a game shed full of balls, board games, puzzles, books, and DVDs, and an open area to play. We had so much fun exploring the grounds everyday.
Not sure if it was the mountain air, or the s’mores but I can’t remember ever being so relaxed on a family trip! It would be so fun to come here with other families and let the kids run around together. I think this is also a great option for a family reunion, or even a couples getaway. You could use Love Ridge as your home base while you travel around the Blue Ridge Mountains, or just enjoy the quiet of Love Ridge.
Although we stayed in a cabin, there are also campsites. If you stay there, you’ll have access to a large kitchen and restrooms.
Local Attractions
There is so much to do in the area that we are already planning a second trip! About 10 minutes from Love Ridge, Lake Sherando has a large swimming lake, fishing, hiking, picnicking, and more! The fee is only $8/car for the entire day!
My family loved hiking the Lakeside Trail, fishing, and relaxing in our hammocks at Lake Sherando.
Another activity only about 15 minutes from Love Ridge is Spruce Creek Park. There is a large, natural playground with a stream, as well as Rockfish Valley Foundation Natural History Center, which offers free admission. We enjoyed hiking part of the Rockfish Valley Trail from Spruce Creek Park.
Finally, for those heading from or towards Richmond, the Blue Ridge Tunnel is a must-do hike! Pack your headlamps and flashlights and make memories walking through this historic railroad tunnel. Again, this is a completely free activity.
Additional Options
There are several options to add to your experience, like a Stargazing Experience, or E-Bike Rental.
Additionally, Love Ridge offers guests lasagna, a snack package, a s’mores package, and more! While all of these have an added fee, the convenience is important after a long day in the mountains.
