Look for Altria Theater to really light up the night when Broadway in Richmond brings its 2022-23 season to town.
“This season is our biggest season yet,” says Cindy Creasy, Broadway in Richmond’s media and public relations representative. “It is the first time we have offered nine shows collectively. It marks the arrival of Richmond as a true Broadway market.”
Show producers, their marketing firms, and cast members are excited about playing Richmond, mainly because of two important reasons, Creasy says.
“First, Richmond audiences are very gracious. We constantly hear from the cast how wonderful and responsive the audiences are. Secondly, ticket sales have been so strong, especially recently with the return to theater,” she says.
Broadway in Richmond started presenting its series in 2009 and as is with anything, “it takes time to cultivate a following and audience,” Creasy says, adding single ticket sales and the year-to-year performance of subscription sales are factored into the equation. “Certainly, there is support of the Richmond market. People come from all over Central Virginia to see shows at Altria.”
The season will showcase the return of Hamilton, along with four premieres and three add-on shows. The return of Hamilton will occur in April 2023 for two weeks, and the Richmond premieres of Dear Evan Hansen in October 2022, Pretty Woman: The Musical in November 2022, Hadestown in May/June 2023, and Ain’t Too Proud in July 2023, will grace Altria Theater’s stage with one-week engagements.
The irresistible and entertaining Hairspray will return to Richmond in January 2023.
For the first time, Broadway In Richmond is offering three add-on shows with Wicked in August 2022, The Book of Mormon in February 2023, and Les Misérables in March 2023, also at Altria Theater.
“Hairspray, which is returning to Richmond, hasn’t been in the market since 2006. It will be ‘new’ to many patrons,” says Creasy. “Broadway theater goers and patrons alike have been asking for Dear Evan Hansen. We hoped to bring it earlier, but because of COVID we weren’t able to.”
Dear Evan Hansen, winner of six Tony Awards® including Best Musical, has struck a remarkable chord with audiences. It is a deeply personal and profoundly contemporary musical about life and the way we live it.
New to national touring is Hadestown. The winner of eight 2019 Tony Awards including Best Musical and the 2020 Grammy award for Best Musical Theater Album, Hadestown intertwines two mythic tales — that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and King Hades and his wife Persephone — as it invites you on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back.
“The fact that we are getting it early is phenomenal,” says Creasy. “We also know Richmond audiences will love Ain’t Too Proud, the story of The Temptations. Jukebox musicals do extremely well in Richmond and people of all ages are going to love this show.”
Why Subscribing is a Good Idea
Creasy emphasizes the benefits of being a subscriber. They include guaranteeing seats year after year, options on upgrading seats, additional special ticket offers, payment plans, pre-paid parking availability and the chance to purchase tickets to add-on shows before the general public. Subscribers also have personal online account access, lost ticket insurance and subscriber support, all included at no additional charge.
Also, to avoid box office and will call lines, Broadway In Richmond subscribers receive electronic tickets prior to the performance via email or their online account. These tickets can be printed at home or stored on smart phones for convenient entry to the theater.
The six-show package starts as low as $265.50 (plus applicable fees). Subscription packages are available Tuesday through Sunday with fantastic seat locations and the best pricing available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. Call the Subscriber Hotline at 804-592-3401 or visit BroadwayInRichmond.com to learn about additional package information.
Creasy is excited about the season. “Already, the feedback is incredible, and we expect another stellar year of musical engagements,” she says. “We look forward to seeing everyone back at Altria Theater and encourage those who haven’t come to a Broadway In Richmond performance to consider joining us this season. You’ll be amazed at the talent, staging, lighting, and costumes.”
