Fun Family Outing: Pick Your Own Fruit Farms

Visiting farms for fruit picking is one of my children’s favorite warm weather outings. To add to the fun, invite grandparents to come along. And, then as a group, bake something delicious using your fresh from the farm produce. This makes a very sweet memory!

A Sampling of Pick Your Own Fruit Farms Near Richmond, VA

Braehead Farm

Drive less than an hour to Fredericksburg, where you’ll find Braehead Farm. Through mid-May there are strawberries, and in June there will be raspberries, as well as an array of vegetables. July through September, blackberries, blueberries, and watermelon are available.

Chesterfield Berry Farm

Open for strawberry picking now through early May. Follow Chesterfield Berry Farm’s Facebook page for updated information about weather-related closures.

Chiles Peach Orchard

Offering strawberry picking in May and peach picking in June, the drive to Chiles Peach Orchard, in Crozet, is worth it. Don’t miss the fresh, delicious ice cream!

Critzer Family Farm

This quaint, peaceful farm in Crozet has strawberry picking in May, followed by blackberry and peach picking later in the summer. After picking your fruit, enjoy the mountain views and home-churned ice cream.

Fruit Hill Orchard

This family-friendly farm is in Palmyra, less than an hour from Richmond. In July, they offer blackberry picking, and while you’re there, pick your own flowers, like sunflowers and zinnias, too!

Gallmeyer Farm

The strawberry patch will be opening mid-May. In addition to strawberry picking, there will be free hayrides and free picnic and play areas.

Hanover Peach Orchard

In July, Hanover Peach Orchard offers pick your own peaches and nectarines. There is no admission fee. Follow Hanover Peaches on Facebook for updates about the official opening date.

Liberty Mills Farm

Head to Liberty Mills for strawberry picking, and mark your calendar for their Strawberry Fest on May 27th, 2023. In June, visit the farm to pick flowers.

Skinquarter Farm

Take a free hayride out to the strawberry patch at Skinquarter Farm. Be sure to follow the farm’s Facebook page for updates.

Swift Creek Berry Farm

Typically opening for blueberry picking at the end of June, Swift Creek Berry Farm is an idyllic spot to spend a summer day.

Windy Knoll Farm

Open May – June, Windy Knoll Farm is a charming, family-owned farm in Mechanicsville. My family loved picking blueberries at Windy Knoll, and the staff is so welcoming.

Make some “berry” sweet memories with your family by visiting one of these farms!
