VCU Massey Cancer Center today announced that it will be renamed VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, in recognition of its recent achievement of comprehensive status from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) – the highest designation issued to cancer centers by the institute.

There are only fifty-six NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the U.S., and Massey is one of two in Virginia. This designation highlights how Massey is influencing a new standard of care through a community-centered approach, recognizing community members as equal experts and strategic partners in its research efforts.

“We are so proud of this hard-earned recognition that it’s only fitting for us to incorporate it into the very name of our cancer center,” said Robert A. Winn, M.D., Massey director and Lipman Chair in Oncology. “This underlines our commitment to our community to deliver the very best care, backed by research personalized to meet our catchment area’s unique needs.”

Massey’s comprehensive status offers those living in its catchment area even greater access to life-saving cancer screenings and clinical trials delivering leading-edge treatments, more resources for critical education about cancer risk and prevention, and care informed by the top scientific minds brought to Massey through recruitment as well as its training of the next generation of physician-scientists.

The  VCU Massey Comprehensive Carnival, a free, family-friendly community celebration at VCU’s Stuart C. Siegel Center, has been postponed due to weather.

As part of the rebranding, Massey has also released a new logo for the cancer center. Employees, media and others wishing to visually represent the Massey brand can reference the identity guidelines on our website.
