Stay Where You’re Most Comfortable – Tent to Luxury Hotel

From camping at nearby Pocahontas State Park to a night at the glitzy Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, my family has enjoyed some unique lodging experiences. While each family member has their own favorite when it comes to where to stay, these are a few that we recommend time and again.

Tent Camping at Pocahontas State Park

With plenty of kid-friendly activities, Pocahontas is a fun way to spend a day; but, spending the night at one of their campsites is something my kids consistently request. The way the campsites are designed makes it easy on caregivers – a grill, picnic table, restrooms, electricity are available. I suggest choosing your site using the map online, and booking in advance. At only $42/night, this is an affordable way to make a special family memory. Be sure to bring a tent, cot, and sleeping bags!

Cabins at Love Ridge Mountain Lodging

If you like the idea of an outdoorsy vacation, but tent camping isn’t for you, Love Ridge Mountain Lodging has beautiful cabins. Set in the Blue Ridge, take advantage of the opportunities to hike and bike, and then come home and relax in the jetted hot tub. My kids love staying at Love Ridge – the bunk beds, large play area, and game room make this a hit for any family that loves spending time outside.

Acorn Hill Lodge

A cozy bed and breakfast located in Lynchburg, Acorn Hill Lodge has family suites. My kids loved staying in an adjoining room watching Paw Patrol, while us grownups watched our own (boring to them) shows in our own room. Pack your own snacks to take advantage of the full size refrigerator and microwave.

Each morning, we admired the ducks in the small pond out front, enjoyed breakfast at the bistro (Early Bird special is a must), and my daughter even got to play the stunning Baby Grand Piano in the entryway. Don’t forget to try the chocolate chip cookies that the staff set out in the lobby! Tip: Grab dinner from JoJo Pizza, less than five minutes from the Acorn Hill Lodge.

Spring Hill Suites Roanoke

I know, I know — a hotel chain?! Ok, but hear me out! This hotel has a beautiful breakfast served daily that includes an oatmeal bar, cereal, fresh fruit, and more. It was the nicest free breakfast buffet I’ve experienced. If you’ve ever traveled with kids you know how important it is to start the day off right, and you can expect to at Spring Hill Suites. Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are available in the lobby 24/7, as well. Additionally, the hotel’s location is perfect for visiting Roanoke. You’ll have a view of the Roanoke Star from the hotel, and it’s less than 10 minutes from downtown Roanoke.

Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center

Gaylord National

It can be intimidating the first time you visit Gaylord National – it is huge! But, for a luxury sort of stay, this is it. Visiting during warm months, you’ll have access to a splash pad and kayaks that are free for resort guests. Other included fun is the indoor pool and events happening at National Harbor like Movies on the Potomac. While there’s plenty to do at the Gaylord and the National Harbor, you could easily drive to Washington D.C. or drive or take a water taxi from the Gaylord docks over to Old Town Alexandria. During the holiday season, Gaylord ICE! is a popular event attracting families with its popular ice sculptures created as part of a theme. This year’s theme is “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”
