As a mom to four boys, there are certain places that are not a great fit for us for particular seasons. The library, for example, was not a great fit when my one year old twins insisted on pulling every book off of the shelf during story time. Unfenced playgrounds were not a great fit for simultaneously nursing a baby and keeping track of three others. And until last weekend, I believed that a play would likely not be a great fit for four active boys. I’m thrilled to share that Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!: A Musical! was an incredible introduction to plays for our family AND I encourage you to try it too!
A Mix of New and Familiar
From the moment we walked in the door to the November Theatre, we were instantly put at ease. There were kid-friendly snacks at the concession area and boosters available. We were greeted warmly and directed to our seats by the ushers. My kids were amazed at how majestic the theater looked, and we explored a new genre of literature together, the playbill, while we waited for the performance to begin. As the lights dimmed, Pigeon made his debut and the audience couldn’t help but shriek with delight. Familiar Pigeon readers will notice subtle (and not so subtle) nods to many of the books, including The Pigeon Finds a Hotdog, The Duckling Gets a Cookie!?, and The Pigeon Wants a Puppy!.
Grown Ups, Too!
While geared towards kids, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus doesn’t leave the grown-ups out of the humor. The Bus Driver stresses over and over, “Public transportation is never, ever late!”–to which the adults in the audience laugh EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. There was also a mention of the Bus Driver having been around the block a few times, which soared right over all the little listeners’ heads.
Incredible Cast
I can’t continue without addressing the incredible performances of the cast members. From the Pigeon himself (Ian Page) to the next-level sound effects of Caroline Lynch and the lovingly dubbed “bird seed lady” (Lily Marcheschi), this cast was unforgettable. However, my family can’t stop talking about the Bus Driver, Imani Blair Crosby. She truly sold being a bus driver as the most exciting career on the planet. I was even thinking of reconsidering my current job to get that super cool hat!
Our Challenges Don’t Limit Us
As Pigeon recalls all of the things he cannot do, he is left thinking he is broken. The Bus Driver is quick to remind him that everyone has strengths and that our individual challenges don’t limit us. With her encouragement, Pigeon tries to use his special wings for flying. I love how Pigeon doesn’t just start flying the first time he moves his wings. But with perseverance and intentionality, he succeeds! Then, he uses his skills to help others and warn them that the bus will be late. What a great model for our children to see.
