Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, marking four decades of working toward a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

What began as a small meeting between volunteers at the old Aunt Sarah’s Pancake House on Board Street has grown into a dedicated affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, addressing some of the region’s most pressing needs. Since its founding in May 1986, Richmond Habitat has built 398 homes and completed 240 home repairs for individuals and families in Richmond, Henrico, and Chesterfield. They have opened two ReStores, expanded their housing programs, hosted thousands of volunteers, and advocated for policies that ensure safe, affordable housing is within reach for all.

This year, the nonprofit will be celebrating its impact with multiple events:

  • In Spring 2026, Richmond Habitat will hold a home dedication to commemorate the completion of the 400th home built for a Habitat homeowner. The date will be announced once construction is completed.
  • From May 11 to May 16, the nonprofit will host a Week of Building Hope, featuring special volunteer events and opportunities that aim to engage at least 400 individual volunteers.
  • Finally, on September 19, they invite everyone to a 40th Anniversary Celebration party to toast the past, present, and future of Richmond Habitat.

“For 40 years, Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity has been rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a decent place to live,” Dave Neary, CEO, said. “Looking back, we’re humbled by what this community has built together: homes raised by volunteers, families strengthened through partnership, and neighborhoods transformed by hope. This anniversary honors the legacy of all who laid the foundation for our work and carried it forward year after year.”

About Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 as a nonprofit organization committed to providing safe, affordable housing opportunities across the world. Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in approximately 70 countries. Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity joined the affordable housing effort in 1986, serving the City of Richmond, Henrico County, and Chesterfield County. Since then, Richmond Habitat has built nearly 400 homes for local families. Along with our homeowners, generous volunteers, and donors, we have restored the hope and dignity that poverty housing often strips away. To learn more, visit www.richmondhabitat.org.
