The Science Museum of Virginia encourages guests to shake the winter blues with a universe of STEM programming, as the next six weeks will feature events catering to families, adults, seniors and more.

Exhibitions and Experiences

Science Museum of Virginia - Poison
  • The touring exhibition “The Power of Poison” is at the Science Museum through April 19. The exhibition challenges guests’ perceptions and deepens their understanding of the fascinating — and often deadly — world of venom and poison. Guests have the opportunity to plunge into a world where truth and fable entwine through the toxic beauty of plants, animals, fairy tales and beyond.
  • Exploration awaits in “Speed” and “Boost,” along with the Science Museum’s Animal Lab and Eco Lab, the latter of which is buzzing with the recent return of a colony of bees

Upcoming Events

Science Museum of Virginia - Speed
  • Guests will have a “Whole Lotta Love” for our next Laser Show on Thursday, January 22, as Led Zeppelin rocks The Dome. The classic hits of the legendary band will be set to a light-and-laser display beneath Virginia’s largest screen. If this week doesn’t work out, everything will be alright. Prince is back on Thursday, February 12 for early Valentine’s Day plans!
  • Sail on the high seas at Science After Darrrrrk on Friday, January 23. This swashbuckling luck at STEM through the eyes and ears of buccaneers walks guests through a family-friendly after-hours experience, but won’t make them walk the plank.
  • The Sunrise Science series continues on Thursday, January 29 with a look at Landscape Urbanism thanks to Marvel’s Tyler Silvestro. The free morning conversation will look at designing environments for the public good, including just outside the front doors of Broad Street Station.
  • Saturday, February 7 is an illuminating doubleheader that will make guests light up! The daytime features the annual celebration GLOW, an all-ages experience of what makes the world around us glow in the dark. Then, as the sun sets, the Science Museum will be electrified by its latest 21+ Science on Tap, an adults-only neon adventure.
  • Senior Science programming continues on Tuesday, February 10 with a free evening for guests ages 60 and up to experience a custom live astronomy show in The Dome.
  • There’s always love for the Science Museum’s heart dissections the week of Valentine’s Day. This special demonstration will take place in the Barbara Thalhimer Theater from February 10–15. The Forge will also get into the spirit of the holiday with a Maker Workshop where guests can make needle felted valentines on weekday afternoons in the first two weeks of February.
  • The Science Museum welcomes educators on Valentine’s Day for its Teacher Open House. The event will feature resources on field trips, a look at potential experiences for students, prizes for educators and more. Science Museum admission is always free for educators, but teachers will feel extra love when they can bring up to three guests for free.
  • The sensory-friendly Minds of All Kinds series continues on Friday, February 27. This quarterly event allows guests to experience the Science Museum after hours in an environment without crowds and with the addition of programming from community partners.
  • The Science Museum will be open for Presidents’ Day (Monday, February 16) and will return to being open seven days a week on Monday, March 2.

The Science Museum’s full programming calendar, with details and ticket information for each offering, can be found at smv.org. All events require admission tickets or advance registration for free events. Additional events will be announced in the coming months.
