For many of you, this is the month to squeeze in those last trips to the pool and beach

…and do lots of shopping for new shoes, notebooks, #2 pencils, and just the right lunchbox. For me, it’s the last year I won’t be putting a kid on a school bus.Just as everyone warned me, the time has flown, and I can’t believe my little preemie is a year away from becoming a kindergartner.

I’m already stressing about the impending school years. I will definitely hang on to “Supplementing School” on page 8, and I’m seriously considering framing the Real Mom article on page 12 because I just KNOW I’m going to try to “help” my kids with their projects way too much!

There are so many things for novice “school moms” like me to fret about. Will he like riding the bus? Will the bus driver be safe? (I mean really…I’m supposed to send him off in a giant yellow tin box with no seatbelts and a total stranger behind the wheel?!) Will he make friends? Will there be bullies in his class? Will he have the best teacher in the whole wide world?

The stress over the wait to hear who the teacher will be seems to be a hot topic among parents this time of year. (See Karen’s Editor’s Voice on page 6.) I must admit, I am anxious to hear who my sons’ preschool teachers will be come September, too. My kids and I form such attachments to the teachers each year, and I always hope they’ll move up with the kids. They haven’t yet, but so far, we’ve always been thrilled with the next set of teachers. I know the day is coming when we won’t love all the teachers, and it will be very tough knowing that there’s really not much we can do about it, other than wait the school year out and hope they don’t move up!

For now, there’s still a whole month of summer to enjoy, and we have some fun events planned for the whole family. Join us on Sunday, August 1, for Wooden Bat Night at the Flying Squirrels game. Then on Tuesday, August 3, head on over to Club Mom at Chesterfield Towne Center for a Back-to-School Fashion Show and a concert by Silly Bus. Saturday, August 14, pull out your golf clubs and come out to RFM Night at Patterson Sports Park.

Good luck to those of you who will be putting your little ones on the bus for the first time. Be sure to get just the right backpack, give just the right hug… and don’t forget to charge the camera the night before school starts!
