Meals on Wheels Volunteer Drivers Needed in the Tri-Cities

Each weekday, more than 800 homebound seniors and disabled neighbors receive a healthy meal and a friendly smile delivered by volunteers with FeedMore’s Meals on Wheels program.

Meals are dispatched from FeedMore’s main office on Rhoadmiller Street in Richmond and at ten satellite sites located throughout FeedMore’s service area. Dedicated to improving the quality of life of homebound individuals by providing support through nutritious meal deliveries, daily social interactions, and safety checks, FeedMore needs more volunteer delivery drivers in the Tri-Cities to carry out its mission.

“We currently have individuals who need our services at some of our satellite sites and we need more volunteers to help deliver our nutritious meals,” said Katie Jantzi, FeedMore’s director of senior nutrition programs and Meals on Wheels. “Our Community Kitchen has the capacity to make more diet-specific meals for these homebound neighbors; now we need more volunteers to support the creation of new routes, especially in Petersburg, Colonial Heights, and Hopewell.”

Volunteer drivers are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels to local seniors in need.

According to Jantzi, volunteer drivers are the backbone of the Meals on Wheels program. Every Monday through Friday, volunteers deliver meals on about ninety-two routes across fourteen cities and counties. With meal deliveries dispatched from strategic locations across FeedMore’s service area, volunteers are able to deliver the healthy meals to neighbors in their own community. Each meal delivery route varies in length and volunteer drivers spend about forty-five to ninety minutes delivering the cooked-from-scratch meals to homebound seniors and disabled neighbors.

“The great thing about this program is that our volunteers get back more than they give,” said Jantzi. “Our delivery drivers provide a vital connection to the outside world, and help ensure our clients are safe in their own home, where they want to be.  The meal and the visit our Meals on Wheels program provides means the world to our homebound neighbors.”
