RFM Bookshelf: “The Immortalists” by Chloe Benjamin

Members of the RFM team share books they’ve recently enjoyed. Maybe you will, too!

Being sad when a book is over is a sure sign that it’s a winner – don’t you agree?

A blurb about The Immortalists caught my eye on my daily dose of TheSkimm back in January, and my waiting list notice from the library arrived just in time for our spring break road trip to South Carolina. I finished it on the way home, seconds before we pulled into our driveway, and I’ve missed the characters ever since.

The second novel by 28-year-old Chloe Benjamin, The Immortalists shares the saga of a Jewish American immigrant’s family in New York City, beginning in 1969. We first meet the four young Gold siblings, ages seven to thirteen at the time, when they sneak out to visit a fortune teller who is rumored to be able to predict the date of someone’s death.

The story then follows the foursome, one at a time, through several decades, and explores topics of religion, race, sexuality, marriage, and parenthood. It will remind you of the unbreakable bonds you share with your siblings and will leave you wondering how you would live your life if you knew the date of your death (or thought you did). Would you want to know if you could?

This novel is definitely a discussion starter and would make a perfect book club book.
