Gunhild Carling is excited to make her debut at The Tin Pan on Oct. 4.
“I love to sing in new places and come back to old places,” says Carling, a Swedish jazz musician, singer-songwriter and vaudeville artist.
Carling was born into music. Carling began playing the drums and singing with her family’s band, the Carling Family, around the age of three. “We played different music. We mixed everything,” she says.
A multi-instrumentalist, Carling plays trumpet, trombone, bagpipes, piano, harp, harmonica, recorder and ukulele. “My mom plays the banjo, guitar and violin and dad played trumpet and piano,” she says.
Carling’s talent has garnered her over 70 million views on YouTube, Facebook, and more.
After she went out on her own, Carling started her own band, Gunhild Carling Big Band, and played big concert halls in Sweden and elsewhere in Europe. She has fond memories of everywhere she’s played, but one of her favorite memories is playing for the King of Sweden for his 70th birthday in 2016. “That was very special,” she says.
A television personality, Carling also appeared on Dancing with the Stars, Sweden and placed third — another feat she says is a favorite.
Over the years, Carling has played in front of crowds that range from 200 to 20,000. She enjoys both atmospheres. “When it’s an intimate venue, you have contact with everyone in the audience,” she says, noting she is looking forward to the intimacy of The Tin Pan.
Carling relocated to the U.S. in 2018. From 2018 to 2022, she toured with Post Modern Jukebox, a musical collective band. Today, she often guest stars with other famous acts. “I am going to tour with Count Basie Orchestra in November,” she says.
A proud mom of two kids — one in high school and the other in college — Carling is happy they have played in their own gigs and with her. “It’s a fantastic thing to play with your family,” she says.
For her, life is about music and enjoying where it takes you. “I love to play music for people because it’s magic,” she says. “When I play music and meet people, there is a special vibe that comes into my heart.”
Tickets for the Saturday, October 4th, 8PM show at The Tin Pan are available here.
