Whether you’re looking for a fun activity for winter break, a multigenerational outing, an experience gift for the holidays, or just love the theatre — this show is for YOU! As I write this, my daughter is humming “I’ve Got a Golden Ticket,” one of the many catchy songs from this spectacular performance.
Here’s why you should see this fantastic show:
Dazzling Design
As the story takes us from Charlie Bucket’s home to Wonka’s world of pure imagination, the set designs flawlessly display just the right balance of special effects and lighting without being overstimulating or taking away from the storyline.
We especially loved the whimsical design of Willy Wonka’s world of pure imagination as the soft lighting and vivid colors brought all types of candy and sugary treats to life. For my seven-year-old son, I liked the way the set changes served as a way for him to understand the setting more clearly.
From the chocolate shop to the way the gold light shone around Charlie Bucket when he ultimately scored that special golden ticket, the set design is a huge highlight of the performance.
Charming Characters
How could you not love the endearing Charlie Bucket who, with his big dreams, cares so deeply for his family? He represents the enduring theme of hope and believing in your dreams that translates so well into this timeless story.
For comic relief, we absolutely cackled in hysterics over Augustus Gloop, “the Bavarian Beefcake,” and Veruca and her father, Mr. Salt. All of these characters offered flawlessly delivered lines, impeccable costuming, and a clever humor that suits both children and adults.
Creative Choreography
The show does an incredible job of blending an array of dance styles. One surprise for me was how the cast used puppets for the Oompa Loompas. Together with perfect timing, they had the puppets dancing in a way that brought them to life in a way that is both creative and innovative.
My daughter, who loves contemporary dance, was especially impressed with Violet Beauregarde, who took on a modern interpretation of the role. Her dancing matched her character — modern, upbeat, and with a sparkly jumpsuit and light-up shoes to match!
Contrasting Violet’s modern dance, Veruca’s Nutcracker Sweet displayed classic ballet turns and leaps. While all these styles in one play may seem like a lot, the transitions were seamless, and it never felt abrupt or choppy.
Helpful Information Before You Go
“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is 2.5 hours long, including a 15-minute intermission. I would suggest arriving early in order to find parking, grab concessions (they have WONKA-ish bars made by Carytown’s For the Love of Chocolate!), and use the restroom.
Street parking is available, or there are paid lots nearby. I recommend using Virginia Rep’s Plan Your Visit page as a guide.
While the show is for all ages, I would recommend for ages 6+. My 7-year-old was captivated for the entire show.
The show runs through January 12. Buy tickets now and use code CHARLIEGIFT (buy one ticket, get one free for all shows).
